Hannah's: The classic trench coat

I know this might seem a little confusing, since the trench is a classic piece in every woman's wardrobe, it can't really be categorized as a trend, but it's definitely a spring essential. It's been the best ally to this transitional weather, when it's rainy and crazy hot in the same day.

Pick them in light fabrics like silk or satin for those warm days or in cotton when the weather gets some colder.

Puede parecer un poco confuso, pero ya que la gabardina es una pieza esencial en todo armario, no puede ser categorizada como tendencia, pero es definitivamente un must-have de primavera. Desde siempre ha sido el mejor aliado de este tiempo de transición, cuando puede llover y hacer muchísimo calor en el mismo día.

Elige tejidos ligeros como la seda o el raso para los días más calurosos o el algodón cuando hace un poco más de frío.

The trench has an amazing history. As you all know, they were created by Thomas Burberry around 1856, where he opened a textile shop in Basingstoke, UK. Not long after that, he invented the most famous breathable and waterproof outwear piece. The trench easily get on the top trend of the coutry, for those who had to work under extreme weather conditions. Burberry's trend was chose by the british army as the official garment in the WWI.

La gabardina tiene una historia apasionante. Como todos sabréis, fueron creadas por Thomas Burberry sobre 1856, cuando abrió su primer comercio de textiles en Basingstoke, Inglaterra. Poco después, inventó la prenda exterior impermeable y transpirable más famosa. La gabardina se puso de moda entre las personas que realizaban actividades en condiciones extremas. Fue elegida como prenda oficial del ejército britanico en la primera guerra mundial.

And even though it's the most common piece of clothing in our wardrobes, it's easily mistaken and confused by the overalls. These are very similar to trenches. You can notice the difference because they are usually longer and much more fluent. They are the best match for any outfit, and can be easily combined in any style, from lady-like to masculine. Secret is, as always, the accessories.

This is a little example I made about the main differences between trench and overall, or any other similar outwear. These are the basic features of the basic trench.

Y aunque sea la pieza más común en nuestros armarios, se confunde muy facilmente con los guardapolvos, que suelen ser más largos y más fluidos. Son la pareja perfecta para cualquier outfit y muy fácil de combinar en cualquier estilo, desde lady-like al masculino. El gran secreto es, como siempre, combinar los accesorios.

Os he hecho un pequeño ejemplo con las diferencias entre gabardina y guardapolvo o cualquier otra prenda exterior similar. Estas son las características básicas de una gabardina.

The epaulettes are these shoulders straps that came with the army uniform often used to hold guns and backpacks without them falling. They also had some straps to secure items like gloves or some other weapons. For us, it's way more useful, we can't risk to lose our precious bags =D

The double breast also fits in this military history, since the coat also features 10 buttons, inside and outside.

Pockets and belt don't really need an extra explanation, but for me, I really find them necessary in any outwear, I need to place my hands somewhere. And it might seem silly, but the shape and the location of the pockets are extremely important for this end.

The basic and classic color of trenches is khaki or beige, even though we see them in camel, militar green, black, dark blue or even white. I like to try all those colors, but especially beige and green. I got both of them the other day at Lefties mid-season sale. They are very fluent and light but damn... they get soooo easily wrinkled. I'll show you some day. It's clear that most times you need to pay for quality.

Los colores clásicos y más básicos para las gabardinas son khaki o beige, aunque los solemos ver también en camel, verde militar, negro, azul marino o incluso blanco. Me gusta probar todo tipo de colores, pero los que más creo que sientan mejor según mi tono de piel son el beige y el verde militar. De hecho, me compre dos el otro día en Lefties en las rebajas de mid-season. Son muy fluidos y ligeros, pero... se arrugan con mirarlos. Os los enseñaré algún día. Pero claramente, en la mayoría de casos, si queremos calidad, hay que pagarla.
